Welcoming your newborn child into the world is a beautiful experience beyond all description. You may never forget the moment you see your baby for the first time: the wonder, the joy, and the pure emotion. Those precious moments, however, will quickly become memories.
Ideally you would want to take newborn photos between 4-21 days after they are born. This is the time where they are still pretty sleepy and love to snuggle up in those cute poses we all love.
You will still be able to get some great newborn shots after that second week. That being said, keep in mind they might be starting to wake up to the world around them. I pencil in your newborn session date one week after you due date or scheduled C-section date and change it based on the actual delivery to ensure we are within the recommended 4-16 day window that is best for newborn sessions.
Expect to be in the photographer’s studio for 2 to 3 hours, as you’ll end up feeding your baby a few times, waiting for him/her to fall into a deep sleep, and taking plenty of breaks as needed and dictated by your baby.
By scheduling in advance, you and your photographer will be prepared for when your baby decides to make its grand entrance.
It’s best to get on my calendar when you are entering your second trimester, but please don’t let that stop you from contacting me if you are past that time frame! Early is always ideal to ensure date availability, but I’m also very flexible on making time for clients who just didn’t get around to scheduling before baby arrived.
A good time to start the booking process is around your second trimester. Reach out to the photographer you want and tell them your due date (and answer any other questions they might have). Then, once your sweet baby is born, let your photographer know the exciting news, and you’ll get an exact date for your session.
It’s no secret that infants sleep a lot. But sometimes, their sleep patterns don’t cooperate with our plans. If you want your little one sacked out during the photo session, so you can get those adorable sleepy newborn poses, keep them up for a while before you arrive.
Making sure you keep your baby awake prior to a session is a great way to guarantee they will sleep through most of it. That will lead to peaceful pictures, instead of ones where they look enraged or red-faced from crying.
